A NEW INSTITUTE AT CSU Pueblo will conduct research and teach students about innovations in railroad, ground, and intermodal transportation, aiming to become a hub of expertise in surface transportation.

The Southern Colorado Institute of Transportation Technology was established by legislation approved by the Colorado General Assembly and signed into law by Gov. Jared Polis.

The institute will be part of a national network of university- based research centers led by the Center for Surface Transportation Testing and Academic Research Inc. It will focus on safety, security, and technological advancements in surface transportation, partnering with both government and private industry and emphasizing solutions for challenges in Colorado.

The institute’s setting in Pueblo is fitting: The city played a leading role in the expansion of railroads across the West and now is home to the Transportation Technology Center, the research and testing arm of the Association of American Railroads.
