CSU PUEBLO IS a regional comprehensive university – focused on teaching in a wide variety of disciplines to prepare undergraduate students for the regional workforce. Yet, the university was recently listed among the nation’s Research Colleges and Universities by the Carnegie Classification of Institutions of Higher Education.

The Carnegie Classification is the leading framework for recognizing and describing the work of institutions within U.S. higher education. Colorado State University, for instance, has an R1 Carnegie Classification, meaning it has very high research spending and doctorate production – putting CSU in the top tier of research universities nationwide.

The new classification for CSU Pueblo indicates rising research activity that, notably, provides unique learning and discovery opportunities for students.

For instance, students have used artificial intelligence to track wildlife movements at Raton Pass and have conducted large-scale studies on athlete nutrition and food security.

This hands-on model allows students to experience every aspect of the research process, from developing hypotheses to presenting findings at national conferences. The result is a dynamic research community where undergraduates make meaningful contributions to solving real-world challenges while developing critical thinking and analytical skills that prepare them for future careers or graduate studies.

“Securing the formal designation represents more than just a classification – it validates our student-first approach to creating knowledge through faculty-student partnerships,” said Gail Mackin, provost and executive vice president for academic affairs.
